Neurology is the diagnosis and management of diseases that affect the nervous system. This can include diseases that impact the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles.
HCA Healthcare UK at The Shard has access to a team of specialist neurologists from London’s leading teaching hospitals to assist with the diagnosis and management of a number of neurological disorders and can refer patients for additional treatment via our sister facility, the London Bridge Hospital.
Neurological disorders can hinder the body’s ability to function correctly, from the lack of sensation in a limb to a complete loss of motor function, and take many different forms depending where in the nervous system they affect.
Neurological diseases include:
- Spinal cord tumours
- Spinal cord compression
- Parkinson’s disease
- Myasthenia (Disorders of the neuromuscular junction)
- Multiple Sclerosis
The symptoms of these conditions vary, from poor memory, headaches, blackouts, dizziness and speech problems to back pain, sciatica, limb weakness and numbness, tremors and bladder problems.
We take a comprehensive approach to the diagnosis of neurological disorders. This uses a detailed neurological history and examination, coupled with appropriate specialised investigations, including neurophysiological testing. This includes testing the electrical functions of the brain, spinal cord and the nerves located in different limbs and muscle groups. In the Neurology Department at HCA at The Shard we utilise two different means of testing:
Electromyography and Nerve Conduction Studies (EMG & NCS)
These tests evaluate the function of the peripheral nervous system. They are particularly useful in diagnosing problems within neurophysiology, such as:
- Carpal tunnel syndrome –nerve compression in the hands, causing pain or a loss of sensation
- Guillain-Barre Syndrome – muscle weakness, numbness and tingling in the face and limbs, which can increase in severity
- Nerve injuries – damage to nerves that send signals around the body, which can cause pain or difficulty in regulating movement
- Peripheral neuropathy – damage to nerves, which can impede movement or cause a lack of sensation in limbs
- Ulnar neuropathy – tingling in the hands and arm caused by pressure or fluid around the Ulnar nerve
These tests also help to confirm any evidence of nerve root lesions (cervical and lumbar radiculopathy) and muscle disorders.
An EEG assesses brain function and helps to diagnose neurophysiology disorders, such as dementia and epilepsy. It also helps when monitoring coma patients and for checking brain function after head injuries or cerebral hypoxia.
These tests help with diagnosis and help to pinpoint the location and cause of neurological disturbances. From this diagnosis a decision can be made about the patient needing surgery. If this is the case the patient is referred to a neurosurgeon. At HCA at The Shard, if surgery is needed you will receive a rapid referral to a neurosurgeon from London Bridge Hospital. Our expert neurologists will advise on managing your neurological disease.
Neurology at HCA Healthcare UK at The Shard
The discovery of a neurological condition can be an unsettling and stressful time. To eliminate as much stress as possible, we aim to arrange an appointment with a consultant neurologist quickly. Ideally, this will be on the same or next day in order to get through diagnosis and commence treatment as soon as possible.
At HCA at The Shard, our Neurology Department utilises the latest advancements in diagnostic technology and treatment to assist in the management of neurological disorders.
Management of a neurological condition needs to be as comfortable for the patient as it possibly can be.
