Gynaecology is the medicinal focus on functions and conditions impacting women’s health.
HCA at The Shard offers a number of different treatments for a variety of conditions, including:
- Abnormal cervical smears
- Abnormally-shaped wombs, which can cause miscarriages
- Endometrial cancer – a malignant growth in the lining of the womb
- Endometriosis – a condition where tissue that behaves like the lining of the womb is found outside it
- Fibroids – an overgrowth of the womb’s muscle
- Ovarian cancer
- Ovarian cysts
- Polyps – small skin tags
Gynaecology procedures and treatments we provide
As well as dealing with general gynaecological problems, we also provide a full range of diagnostic services.
Procedures available within the Gynaecology Department include:
A hysteroscopy is usually carried out if a patient experiences abnormal bleeding. This investigative procedure helps in the diagnosis of fibroids, polyps and endometrial cancer, and can also help to detect an abnormally-shaped womb.
This examination is carried out using a small telescope called a hysteroscope. Biopsies can be carried out during a hysteroscopy, which involves removing a small piece of the lining of the womb for analysis.
With similar preparation to a cervical smear, this procedure uses a bright light and microscope to analyse a patient’s cervix.
A colposcopy helps to identify abnormal cervical cells. If any abnormalities are found, the patient’s gynaecologist will perform a biopsy for an additional analysis to take place.
Large loop excision of the transformation zone (LLETZ)
A LLETZ is a minor procedure that can be carried out during a colposcopy. It makes use of a thin wire loop, which is heated using an electrical current to help remove abnormal cells in the cervix.
This procedure only takes a few minutes and is intended to remove abnormal cells for further investigation. Follow-up procedures can be recommended to ensure the patient is healing well and there is no recurring abnormal cell growth.
Ovarian cancer diagnosis
At HCA at The Shard we have consultants who can diagnose ovarian cancer, detecting the illness at an early and treatable stage.
Ovarian cancer is often discovered at an advanced stage. This is because there are no reliable early symptoms to assist in diagnosis – of the 7,000 cases reported each year, 6,000 are untreatable. However, should ovarian cancer be detected early, the treatment has a 90% success rate.
